Spa & Hot Tub Treatment Starter Guide

CHLORINE BASED TREATMENT

The ratio of people per litre of water in a spa is alot higher than that of a pool and also the higher temperature makes it much more susceptible to change in shorter periods of time. Extra vigilance must be kept on water quality.

In general your average spa or hot tub holds approximately 800 to 1000lts of water. The portable lay z spa and mspa types also fall into this banding. As such all our pre measured treatments are based around treatment of 1000lts.

Take a bucket of hand hot (not boiling!) water and dissolve approximately 12g of granular Chlorine into it. This can take a few minutes to dissolve but can be quickened by occasional stirring.
KEEP CHILDREN AND ANIMALS AWAY FROM THE CONTAINER. Make sure you do this outside and in a well ventilated area. Once it has fully dissolved you can add it to the spa. Make sure the pump is running to circulate it evenly. This will bring the Chlorine levels up quickly.

Now add 1 normal Chlorine  tablet to your dispenser and open 1 slot at the base. Place the dispenser in the spa. Leave the spa for approx 12 hours and then test using test strips to see if the levels are correct. Increase or decrease the slot openings as required. The test strip will also tell you the pH value etc of the water. This is important as it will affect the performance of the Chlorine. You can increase or decrease this using  pH + / - . IMPORTANT NOTE - Try and get the TA level ( Alkalinity) correct first. An incorrect TA level can result in your pH levels going up and down without reason!
This is done with TA increaser if too low or pH minus if too high.

To start with it is a good idea to test the spa every day until you get a steady level, then you can decrease to 2 - 3 times a week depending on usage

We recommend shock dosing the spa every 7 to 10 days. The more frequent interval for higher usage.

Sometimes you will get 'foaming' in the spa and if this is unwanted you can apply a small amount of 'anti foam or no foam'.  Just a small amount will help combat this.

 BROMINE BASED TREAMENT (TABLET FORM)
This is almost exactly the same as above with the following exceptions. Bromine based spas require higher levels than Chlorine based ones but it is kinder to sensitive skin and allergies and also doesn't have any of the chlorine smells that many people dislike. It is also so far less affected by less than ideal pH levels and high temperatures.
1 - Use Oxy Shock instead of Chlorine shock dose granules. You will need to use 30g at a time.
2 - Add 3 to 4 Bromine tablets to the dispenser and open ALL slots to start with. This can be reduced to around 2 to 3 tablets & 2 slots once you have the levels up. You will need to adapt this to your needs so it may be more or less.
3 - Use BROMINE compatible test strips!

BROMINE IS SLOW TO DISSOLVE SO GETTING THE LEVEL UP TO START WITH CAN BE HARD. WE RECOMMEND USING OUR BROMINE GRANULES TO DO THIS. YOU CAN ALSO USE GRANULES INSTEAD OF TABLETS.
